We need a constant memory refresh to remind the beauties that surround us in Italy.
The same applies for the event we had. I was extremely pleased that in such a short time we were able to put together likely the best of the current Italian entrepreneurship ecosystem.
On one side, in the morning we had presentations from the best of breed of Italian seed and VC investors (here's the list of participants).
Their presentations were very practical, informational and down-to-earth.
In the afternoon, the ball moved into the start-up field. We participated to parallel presentations of 28 start-ups, most of them participants of the first edition of the MtB business plan competition.
Here's a list of the presenting start-ups, and a short description.

Now, it goes without saying that we have some margins for improvement, in selecting, presenting and receiving the new great business ideas our country is producing.
But it was refreshing to see gathered a smart group of prospective entrepreneurs on one side and a growing group of local investors on the other, talking the same language, try to build critical mass, sharing information candidly.
I had the impression that a new wave is just starting, and it's just thrilling that Mind the Bridge is among the drivers of such a change.

Finalist MtB Italian Start-ups in Silicon Valley

On April 1st in San Francisco, Mind the Bridge introduced the finalists from its first annual business plan competition. A taxi ride from the airport to Caracas goes for 120 USD, a room at the Marriott for almost 400 USD, renting a room for a presentation at the Intercontinental, north of 2000 bucks.

I mean, those are prices worth of high business season in Manhattan… in Buenos Aires (3hrs away from Caracas) the same level of services would go for 30% of that. In Bolivia, were I was the week before, less than ¼.

So what’s going on? It didn’t take me much to figure it out. Everybody, from the taxi driver, to the book publisher would tell you. And in fact, they did tell me. It’s all about the Comandante! Since Chavez won his first elections (coincidentally the last exact time I happened to be in Venezuela, 9 years ago) he started a long process of deep political - economical manipulations that have been reshaping the whole scenario of the Latin American economies.

One of the consequences evident even to the most clueless of the visitors is the black market for dollar. All locals would translate the costs of a taxi ride from bolivares into dollars at a rate than is 2:1 from what the official exchange rate, thus making my same 120USD taxi ride cost me about 50, had I exchanged my dollars with any of the hundreds folks who offered me at the airport rather than at the usual ATM…

Not even in Cuba I had seen such an extensive use of a black market..

Now the second thing that really struck me though, was during my presentation in front of the 30 major book publishers of the country. Supposedly, the growing number of government owned publishing houses, have been used for propaganda, flooding the market with hundreds of new titles, some of which had to be printed in Cuba for lack of domestic fast book throughput.

Every corner of the Venezuelan society transpires of the eternal fight between the 2 political-economical blocks. Yet, at least for what I could see, the 2 worlds of commercial and governmental book publishers seem to be strangely in peace, sitting around the same tables, asking similar questions, eating the same arepa-based breakfast without evident conflict.

Well. Thanks god I had time to ruminate those thoughts (and more) zipping margaritas in the nice Margarita island for the week end… this time, exchanging money in the black market (equals 2X margaritas…)

Mind the Bridge Finalists - announcement

Thur Jan 10th, we declared the finalists for the MindtheBridge Business Plan Competition.

Here's my post about the event of SiliconValleyStudyTour network.

It was my first event there, and, I have to admit, I was pretty well impressed by the quality of the discussion. The topic of the event was the super hot “Solar and other alternative clean energies”.

Michele Appendino (whose path I had crossed a few time in my past lives, here in the picture) opened the discussion. Michele, founder of one of the fist VC in Europe, is now spending his energy promoting Solar Ventures, a general management firm for handling large solar panel projects. The fact that the idea is coming from one of the few Italian high-risk financial entrepreneurs, speaks plenty about how much of a business opportunity clean energy is becoming.
By the way, in the last months Michele co-started Face2Face and First Generation, two great initiatives, supported by the US embassy to promote the connection amongst first generation Italian entrepreneurs in order to spur innovation.

The SF department of environment showed a few interesting projects the city is undertaking and a great website http://www.sf.solarmap.org/ for planning solar panels installations for residential users (I’m one of those…)

However, the big hit of the panel was apparently Karel Vanheusden, CEO of InnovaLight, a very hot, multi honored startup. Karel presented the ultra-low cost thin film solar power modules, going in deep technical details, but clearly communicating that the price/performance ratio for Solar panel will dramatically decrease in very short time.

Net, net, I felt so green that, coming home, I planted some new basil plans.

YOU TUBE your Book!

Simon and Schuster is (to my knowledge) the first large publishing house using You Tube to promote their books.

They actually set up a .tv channel, (check it out) in addition to a whole subscription channel on You Tube. The machine was showcased at the BEA conference in NYC which I attended last week. According to the sources:

The new machine as a technological innovation promises to revolutionize how we buy books. It allows printing and binding a single copy of a book at the point of demand without human interactions. Buying a book will eventually be very similar to getting cash from an ATM. You choose a title, insert a credit card to pay for the book -- and walk away with the finished book a few minutes later. On a global scale this would eliminate shipping and warehousing costs for books (thereby also eliminating returns and pulping of unsold books) and allow simultaneous global availability of new books. POD offers the opportunity to deliver development knowledge and content to students, practitioners, media, and simply interested individuals in a way they could not be reached before.

The articles report that the machine, which is intended for use in bookstores, libraries and other retail outlets, will sell for less than $100,000 and that currently has access to over 200,000 out-of-copyright books through the Open Content Alliance, a number of Arabic-language books from the Library of Alexandria and 2,200 World Bank titles (!).

Here are some sources: Publisher Weekly, CNN Money, the World Bank (!)
Here's a video of how it works.

It's been defined as "the future of the book".
More than 600 of the most influential people in Philanthropy, business and social entrepreneurship gathered from across the world.

From the very first moment it became very clear we are living a topic moment in the so called “philanthropic” world. We are assisting at a total convergence between the private and the social sector. To Judith Rodin (president of the Rockefeller Foundation) words: we are now leaving Phylantropy 3.0, as opposed to 1.0 of the beginning of the 1900 (donations) and 2.0, after WWII, characterized by the Program centered philanthropic organizations.

I bet the term coined by Judith will become part of our daily buzzwords, much like the Tim O’Reilly intuition of Web 2.0.

We are now officially in the era of “phylantrepreneurs” where the difference between a VC found and a foundation, a hot start-up and social venture become totally blurry.

Honestly, to get to that conclusion, we just had to look around, and see the faces of the participants amongst the panelists and the public: Marc Benioff, Larry Brilliant, Alan Patricof, Jean and Steve Case, William Draper, etc. etc.

And clearly, the host itself, Google and his Philanthropic arm Google.org (effectively a for-profit organization) as a clear example.

Indeed, Larry and Sergey (accompanied by Larry Brilliant) interviewed by the always subtle and jovial Jane Wales (president of the Forum) were one of the various hits of the gathering. Larry and Sergey (who once again alone decreased of a good 15 years the average age of the participants) clearly demonstrated how Philanthropy 3.0 can be a direct effect of Web 2.0. How the approach of “Don’t be evil” (who Sergey wants to change into “DO good”…) can be the common denominator between a successful company maniacally focused on doing something of direct value for the users and the so-far called “Extra-world” of Philanthropy (that in Greek means “love for mankind”).

And it was interesting to see how the newest and the oldest in the house (Google.org and the Rockefeller Foundation) would move together hand in hand, sure to have come to the same conclusions, although coming from very different paths…

The conference unfolded with an impressive set of hands-on experiences and panels on how it’s come the time to apply the best lessons learned in the plain vanilla- business (its talents and resources) to have a wider look at the opportunities offered by the “social” sector and developing world.

I personally had some memorable conversations with Ali Mufuruki (founder of the African Leadership Initiative) and representatives from Avina who described me the amazing work done with the Recyclable Material Pickers (read the 2 millions of people living over mountains of garbage) all throughout Latin America (Ciudad Saludable).

The grand finale (a few hours ago) was in the hands and vision of the always appreciated Bill Clinton, who, more and more, reminds me (even physically) of Jimmy Carter (who really impressed me at Google a few months back). I’m sure Bill won’t get offended by the comparison…the two are really merging their paths…

Adieu Jean-Noël . . .

Europeana.eu, the last name for “la contribution Française a la Bibliothèque Numérique Européen”.

In addition to be a respected author and archetype of the “intellectuel français”, Jean-Noël gained a great notoriety at international level after his notorious article on le Monde, When Google Challenges Europe ["Quand Google defie l'Europe"]

Arguably, his article started off the somehow disingenuous controversy to provide a European alternative to Google Book Search, and finally, to Google search…And it did have the immediate outcome to slow the program adoption by French publishers, with the result of having French content somehow under-represented in Google Book Search.

Not only the article gave him more notoriety that he could have ever expected (as a matter of fact I always suggest to sue Google if you can: most likely you won’t win the lawsuit, but you WILL become worldwide known!), but it also gave him the basics to publish a new book, which (guess what?), his publisher added to Google Book Search : “<span style="color: windowtext;

It’s not my intention to discuss over the highly politically charged agenda of Jean- Noël (whose Google internal nickname was “Johnny Christmas” as a result of the “not always impeccable” Google language translator – how comical is that?)

I’m more interested in seeing whether this is the start of a new era or rather the confirmation of a hard-to-sustain position for France on the topic.

Either way, all the best to Jean-Noël, for all his new endeavors… and all the best to Europeana!
We can’t wait to see when the project will develop into an integrated, multi-language, multicultural digital library. We need more of those.
